Our writing genre for the past term has been the Procedural Genre. The procedural genre is basically the 'how to' genre where we teach someone how to do something by writing clear instructions that are easy to follow. This is different from our work previosuly where we learned about the narrative writing genre which involved us using our imaginations to make up a fictional story. First we read a procedural text on how to make tea and how to make a friendship pie during friendship week which was referenced in a previous post. By doing this we could see that each procedure needs a
Toast Time!We decided to write a procedure on 'How to make toast' but first we needed to actually make toast so that we could write some clear steps for our procedure writing. Take a look. We revised orally the procedure many times and completed this iPad activity on how to make toast. This was important so as to make it easier for us to write our procedure. Can you remember what to do? Finally it was time to write our procedures. The children did amazingly as you can see below. All the work is independent, with a few prompts for spellings. The children could independently select the words the needed themselves for their writing from a shared word bank they created which was available for them in our classroom! Well done everyone! My Body. Our Senses! The second half of Term 2 saw us learn about our bodies. This involved learning about our senses and how they associated organ works. It was a topic which provided us with lots of hands on learning experiences which we enjoyed very much. Take a look at what we got up to. The Sense of SmellFirst we used our nose (organ) to determine the different scents as can be seen on the tray above. These were:
After that it was time to put our noses to the test and see if we could identify each of the scents blindfolded. We linked in some literacy writing too by writing a tick list of all scents so we could keep score and record our answers. The Sense of Taste.Let's see if our tongue was able to identify the different taste receptors of salty, sweet and sour. The Sense of Sight. We examined our eyes in a mirror, drew diagrams of our eyes and then labelled the different parts of the eye. We can name and identify
After that we played a fun "Who's Eye is this?" quiz. Can you identify your own eye in the slideshow below? The Sense of HearingWe took our learning outside to our outdoor classroom on a beautiful, sunny Thursday afternoon for our learning about the sense of hearing. We listened to the sounds we could hear, drew pictures of the items that made the sounds, recalled if they were natural or man-made and labelled them. Take a look at some of our drawings.
Let's look back over Term 2B.Take a look at our corridoor which showcases our amazing artistic talents. I hope you agree that all pieces of art on display are very unique. These photos show our work when we studied the work of George Seurat and Josef Albers. We learned about an interesting technique called pointillism which George Seurat was famous for. The work above was based on our study of the artist Josef Albers. He experimented with the use of colours through squares. This learning linked with our learning in maths at the time which involved 2D Shapes. Take a look at this lovely story below called The Perfect Square. What can you turn a simple square into? How far can your imagination take you? This video has got no audio read-a-long. Can you try and read this story by yourself? What a fun way to develop reading skills. Friendship weekFriendship week came along in February. We were very excited to celebrate this week as we are all great friends in 1st class. As a class we discussed how important our friendships are in the class. We are committed to building positive relationships with each other and it is truly heartwarming to see the children develop these relationships with each other each and everyday. As part of discussion we revised our key words and school values which we celebrate each month at our assemblies. They are: Respect, Inclusive, Fair, Honest, Safe, Empathy and Nurture. We spoke about how essentially they are the qualities of a good friend. Someone who shows you respect, includes you in their games, is fair in sharing and turn taking, tells the truth, makes sure our games are safe for everyone to play and can see things from another persons point of view and not just their own. As part of our writing in literacy we wrote a friendship pie recipe. Procedural writing was our writing genre last term so this gave us a great opportunity to showcase our talents here. Then we made some friendship pies. Take a look. Check back in soon for some more Term 2 throwbacks!
