It is the second week of Active Fortnight in our school. Each day we are inviting the children to try an activity from our Active Fortnight page on our school website.

Please note that we are using Seesaw for most of the activities so be sure to login each day to check out the activities that we’ve set for you. There will be activities available daily from 8:30am. We will have instructions, videos and resources to help with each activity. If you still need to give consent for your child to use Seesaw please fill out the consent form here.
Remember, any learning that is saved in the Seesaw journal is private and only the teachers and student can see what's in there. If there is a particular piece of learning, picture or video that your child is really proud of and wants to share with everybody on their class web page, here are two ways to do that:
1. Leave a comment beneath the work on Seesaw telling us that you would like to put it on the website. It could be something like this: "Please share this on the website." If we see that comment, we will do our best to post it.

2. You can still use the forms here on the First Class pages on the school website for sending us special pieces that you want to share with the class.

Messages from the Teachers

Below you will find a suggested daily schedule! Please note that this outline is only a suggestion. We are aware that there are lots of things happening at home so please do what you feel is manageable. For those of you who want some extra challenges, please take a look at our bonus activity page.

If you wish, you can download a printable version of this week's weekly plan here and you can download a printable version of this week's resources here. If you do not have a printer don't worry. It is not necessary to print anything off, all of the activities can be done without printing. It's just there as an option.

Home Learning Week beginning: 27th April 2020
Here are our learning topics for this week!
Maths: Length & Mental Maths
English: Adjectives and creative writing
SESE: Plants and History
Visual Arts: Art and Music
Your spelling list is:
(win, sit, stop, fry, dry, crying, sky, more, before, myself)
Your tables for this week are:
+7 (Look at the print out sheet for the list)
Extra resources you might need this week (to make your own metre length):
  • A ruler or a tape measure
  • paper or card or string
  • sellotape
Daily Tasks (These tasks can be repeated daily)
Reading: Read for at least ten minutes.
Spellings: Write out your spellings using Look, Read, Cover, Write, Check.

Tables: Write out your tables using Look, Cover, Write, Check. You could try making it a little more challenging by mixing up the order of the tables.
Monday:
1. English: Adjectives are describing words. They add detail to nouns and help you imagine things in your head. Watch Martha’s video below and have a look at this presentation to find out more about them. Then choose suitable adjectives to go with the list of nouns on this page. You can print the page or you can just write each one into your copy. Draw a picture after each one.
Look at my examples:

________ dog - brown dog
_______ cat - fluffy cat

2. Maths: Measure the width of these items with your handspan. Watch Deirdre's video to see how to do this. Measure your window, door, and table and record your results.
What would happen if an adult measured the same item? Would they get the same number of handspans? Why?

We can use lots of different objects to measure with but if we want to get the same result we need to use the same measuring unit. Tomorrow we will start learning how to measure in metres.
3. SESE: We’re coming to the end of springtime. May will be the first month of summer in Ireland. There are lots of plants, trees and flowers growing at the moment. What other signs of spring did you notice?  Have a look at this activity and give it a go.
4. Music: In the last home learning plan, we suggested that you do a sound walk in your home. Today we would like you to have a go at making your own instrument. We have an example set of instructions here but you could experiment with making your own musical instrument with things you could find around your house. We have some pictures below to give you some inspiration. Check out Martha’s video where she made a shaker at home.

Bonus: Check out Andrea’s page this week. She has some fun listening activities for you to try.

Making your own musical instrument demonstration with Martha

Here are some other ideas for your musical instrument:

Tuesday:
1. English: Adjectives can make sentences more interesting. Here is a sentence with no adjectives.
Look at the horse.
I’m going to make it more interesting by adding some adjectives to describe the noun in the sentence.

Look at the beautiful, brown, fast, tall, friendly horse.

Can you make these 5 sentences more interesting by writing them out with extra adjectives? You will need to add adjectives to describe the words that I’ve underlined. If you would like an extra challenge, you could write some of your own sentences. You can look at this page to help you do this activity.

  1. I saw a spider.
  2. I love this jumper.
  3. There was a slug over there.
  4. I have a cat.
  5. I am reading a book.

2. Maths: Watch this video about giraffes in the zoo to show people measuring with metres in real life. Today we will create a metre stick or tape so that you can do some of your own measuring at home. You can use the print out sheet here or you can make your own with string or paper. When you have made your metre stick keep it safe as we will be using it tomorrow.
3. SESE: Have a look at this presentation that explains the life-cycle of a flowering plant. In your copy, draw a picture of each stage and label it or write some sentences if you can to describe what is happening in the picture. (Look at our bonus activity for more on the flowering plant if you’re interested).
4. Music: Today we would like you to use the instrument that you made yesterday to create your own non-word song. You can also use body percussion. Try out our example song:
Clap your hands three times,
Shake your instrument twice,
Stamp your feet four times,
Shake your instrument five times.

You can watch some children using body percussion in a workshop on this video. When you’ve completed your song, you could record it and send us your video or audio file if you want! We would love to hear them!

Bonus: RTE have a lesson on wild flowers. You can check that out here.
Wednesday:
1. English: Draw your own monster. Look at our example of how we described the parts of our monster. Can you do the same with your monster? You can use the two word banks to help you write your sentences. You can see our example here.
2. Maths: Today we would like you to try measuring things in your home with the metre stick. We’ve chosen two things for you to measure and you can choose another three yourself. Before you measure each item first make an estimate of how many metres it might measure. An estimate is a good guess. Then measure and write in your result. It is OK if the estimate is different to the result!
  1. Measure the length of your bedroom
  2. Measure the length of your kitchen
  3. Then choose three other things to measure.
You can use this example to help you lay out your work. Deirdre has made a video to help you.
3. SESE: There are lots of different wildflowers growing at the moment. You could go for a little walk near your home with your adult. Bring a notebook with you and draw the different wild flowers that you can see. What do you notice about them? What is the same? What is different? Do you know the names of any of these flowers? You can use this guide from the county council to help you identify your flowers. If you can’t go for a walk that’s OK have a look at this link to read about wildflowers in Ireland or you can see a video of lovely flowers and listen to some relaxing music on this one.
4. Music: Can you make the sound effects to go with these words? You could use things in your house, body percussion or your homemade instrument.
  1. The sound of the ocean?
  2. The sound of the rain?
  3. The sound of the wind?
  4. The sound of footsteps?
  5. Can you make a happy sound?
  6. Can you make an excited sound?
  7. Can you make a sad sound?
You could record your sounds or you could write down how you made each sound.

Bonus: Check out the book club page. Maybe you could submit a review or try a reading challenge!

Measuring with Deirdre

Thursday:
1. English: Today we are going to use our senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch). If you want, you can go on a senses walk inside or near your home. Check out Sinead’s video from last week in Senior Infants where she also went on a senses walk. On your walk, record the things that you:

Saw
Heard
Touched
Smelled
Tasted

Now write some sentences about each thing - remember to add an adjective as well!

Here is our example:

I tasted delicious porridge.
I heard beautiful birds singing.
I saw tall trees.
I touched smooth rocks.
I smelled fresh grass.

You can use this example to help lay out your work.

2. Maths: Have a go at these mental maths questions. If you can’t print out the page that’s fine, just write the answers straight into your copy.
3. SESE: Today, we would like you to find out a little more about one type of wildflower - the dandelion. Maybe you saw one on your walk? Have a look at this presentation and then draw the life-cycle into your copy. You could use this example page to help.
4. Art: We would like you to have a go at drawing a dandelion in its two stages. Have a look at the example. You could use colouring pencils, crayon or maybe paint.

Bonus: Have a look at Caitriona’s ISL page. Could you learn some signs?

Here are some ideas for today's dandelion art activity:

Friday:
You can watch Andrea's video to do your spelling and table test. Good luck!
1. English: Today you can do some free writing. You could write your news or a story. Your mission is to try to include some adjectives. At the end colour in any adjectives that you have used. Have fun!
2. Maths: Do the Daily Ten questions on this website, choose 1st or 2nd Grade.
3. SESE: Today we would like you to have a look at a history story called the Children of Lir. You can look at this presentation or you could watch this video. After you have read or have listened to the story, draw a picture of an important part of the story. You could write a sentence to explain what is happening.
4. Art: Create your own wild flower or tree picture. You could use paint, pencils or crayons or you could have a go at making a collage. Have a look at the examples for inspiration.

Bonus: Check out the RTE Home School Hub episode where they used things around their home as stencils! This could help with your art today! Here is the episode and here are the resources.

Below you will find a suggested daily schedule! Please note that this outline is only a suggestion. We are aware that there are lots of things happening at home so please do what you feel is manageable. For those of you who would like some extra challenges, please take a look at our bonus activity page.
Monday:
1. Spellings and Tables: Write out your spellings and your tables using look, cover, write, check.

3. Maths: Talk about why you would need to measure the length of things. List as many examples as you can think of. Use an empty milk carton as a unit of measure. Record and measure the length of 5 objects with the milk carton in your home. Record how many milk cartons each one measures. Check out our example grid below. Then put the objects in order from shortest to longest. Check out our video to show you how we measured using a milk carton.

4. SPHE: This week we’re learning about Growth Mindset. We have already watched some of these videos in class and now we’d like you to watch them again at home and if possible, share them with your family. Today please watch chapter 1: Your Brain is Like a Muscle and then discuss some or all of the questions below which have the title "Your Brain is Like a Muscle". If you want, you can draw or write your responses.

BONUS: This week five of the spelling words have the “igh” spelling patterns. Can you think of any other words with the igh words? Write them and draw a picture to show what the word means.
Tuesday:
1. Spellings and Tables: Write out your spellings and your tables using look, cover, write, check.
2. English: When writing instructions we need to use bossy verbs like Little Miss Bossy. You have to put the bossy verb at the start the sentence when giving instructions. Read through some examples of bossy verbs in Little Miss Bossy's list below. Then, choose 5 words from Miss Bossy's list and write five bossy sentences. Remember to underline the bossy word at the end. Here are some of our examples:
Pour the milk.
Brush your teeth.
Put the cereal in the bowl.
Tidy your room.
Measure the table.
Picture
3. Maths: Today, please repeat yesterday’s Math's investigation using a different measuring object. Choose a new object to use as a unit of measure today. You could choose: a toy car, a pencil case, a lego brick, a building block. Measure the same objects  that you measured yesterday and record your new results. (There is a sample grid below if you want to use it.) Then, put the objects in order from shortest to longest. Has anything changed since yesterday? Talk about your results.
4. SPHE: Today, please watch chapter 2 of Mojo’s journey: The Magic of Mistakes.
Then check out some or all of the discussion points below. If you want, you can draw or write about some of your answers.
BONUS: Check out the handwriting activity on Andrea’s page here.
Wednesday:
1. Spellings and Tables: Write out your spellings and your tables using look, cover, write, check.
2. English: Instructions have the steps that people need to follow. They must be in order or otherwise the instructions won’t make sense! Can you fix the muddled up set of instructions that are attached below? They are mixed up and need to be put into the correct order. You could print the page out here or below, cut up the steps and re-stick them in the correct order or you could rewrite the steps into your copy in the correct order.
3. Maths: Today we’re going to investigate the meaning of some words: long, longer, longest, high, higher, highest. Write these words on six pieces of paper. Then create some structures/groups of objects to match each word. You could use playdough or lego bricks. Check out Deirdre's video below for some tips. Challenge question: what is the difference between long and high?
4. SPHE: Today please watch chapter 3: The Incredible Power of Yet. Then discuss some or all of the questions below. If you want, you can draw or write your responses.

BONUS: Check out Sarah L’s life skill this week by clicking here.
Thursday:
1. Spellings and Tables: Write out your spellings and your tables using look, cover, write, check.
2. English: Today we are going to start writing our own set of instructions. Choose what you will write instructions for. Some examples might include:
  • An instruction for a game.
  • A recipe.
  • How to build a lego house.
Today you need to write the title of your instructions and the list of things that the person will need. TOP TIP: It might be a good idea to try out your chosen activity before you start writing so that you will know exactly what things are needed.
You can watch Martha's video below to see her example.
3. Maths: Today we are investigating the words tallest and shortest. Neatly, draw a family portrait (you can include pets, other family members and friends if you wish!) Label each person with their name. Next, circle the tallest family member in red and the shortest family member in blue.
4. SPHE: Today please watch chapters 4 (The Mysterious World of Neurons) and 5 (Mojo Puts it all Together) of Mojo’s Adventure.
As a challenge: Design and draw your own DOJO monster or monsters. Could you draw them learning something new? Write a sentence underneath your picture explaining what is happening.
BONUS: Check out our school book club page and try out one of the suggested activities.
Friday:
1. Spellings and Tables: It’s time for your weekly spelling and tables test. Watch Andrea’s video below and she will do your spelling check test with you.
2. English: Today we want you to write the steps to go with the instructions. Remember:
  • Your steps should be numbered
  • Your steps should be in the correct order.
  • Your steps should include a bossy verb.
You can watch Martha's video below to see how she wrote her steps.
3. Maths: Do the Daily Ten questions on this website, choose 1st or 2nd Grade.
4. Science: We are learning about the human body and the senses. We have five senses. This week we’re focusing on the sense of hearing. Do a sound walk in your house or your garden or balcony. Walk around silently and write down/draw the sounds that you can hear.
BONUS: As an extra challenge you can watch this video about how your ears work.
Challenge question: In the video, what instrument did they compare parts of the ear to?
