These included the long jump, javelin, skipping/jumping, potato and spoon race and penalty shoot out. The sun shone; we had a super start to our day! Following a busy morning, we settled down to eat our lunch. It was such a treat to have a picnic together. Now that our bodies were fueled for more action, we moved to different stations. These included an obstacle course, beanbag throw, sponge race, racket and ball race and a sack race. It was great to experience such a variety of activities! We had a super, successful Sports Day!

A Visit From Wooly FarmYesterday was a special day for us in Senior Infants. We had our school tour! We arrived at school to see some animal themed balloons. We even saw some of the adults dressed up! We started our day with some animal themed art. We used paper bowls, tissue paper, googley eyes and glue. We are proud of how they turned out. After yard, it was time to prepare to visit the animals. First, we visited the shed. Here, we got the opportunity to hold some rabbits and to pet some chicks and guinea pigs. It was very exciting! Then, we went on to visit some other animals. We were introduced to a goat named Oreo and her kid named Benji. They were kind enough to let us pet and brush them. We also met a hen. We approached her quietly and respectfully as she was sleeping. Farmer Al chose four children to hold the hen. This made us laugh! Having said goodbye to the hen, we went on to visit some animals at the Snuggle Station. We met some lambs and a pig. We learned that the lambs were only born ten days ago! They were very cute and very affectionate. Time with these animals warmed our hearts. The teachers also had lots of fun holding and petting the animals. The snuggles were good for the soul! What a super school tour!
iPads in Senior InfantsIt was a wonderful surprise to learn that we would have access to some iPads this month. We spent some time discussing how to use and show respect to the iPads. Many of us have used iPads before; we shared some of our experiences. Going forward, we hope to use the iPads during Play Rota. There is a cool phonics app which will help to consolidate our learning so far. It's fun, interesting and is sure to support us in becoming efficient readers. Check out some photographs of us exploring the iPads in pairs. We Are SpecialRecently, we have been learning about growing and changing. We have begun to recognise that we are all unique; we grow and develop at different rates.
We extended this learning to focus on the qualities and characteristics that make us special and unique. We discussed this with one another. We listed some physical characteristics that make us unique, such as our skin colour, hair colour and eye colour. We then spoke about the different qualities and interests we have. We illustrated and wrote about our uniqueness in the stars displayed below. Each star is unique, each star is different- just like us! Exploring TravelThis month, as part of Play Rota, we are exploring a new theme- travel. We discussed and recorded of all of the things we know about and associate with travel. The list is lengthy! One area of our classroom has been transformed into an airport and holiday destination. This area is decorated with pictures, signs and labels. There are holiday brochures, boarding passes and passports. There is a cockpit for the pilots complete with a telephone and headphones. There is a suitcase and a sand pit for those who have just arrived (in their imagination!) to sunny Spain. Don't forget to look out for the sharks in the water! Check out some photographs of this space below! Using our imagination, we have adopted the roles of pilot, co-pilot, airport security, cabin crew and passengers. We've pretended to be holidays makers, creating sandcastles at the beach. See us in action below! Although some international travel may be restricted right now, we can travel worldwide in our imagination!
We Are a Friendly Class! This week, our class won a certificate for being the "Friendliest Class". We are delighted!
We pride ourselves on showing respect to others and greeting others with a smile. What a great end to the month! Wishing you all a safe and happy mid-term break! Our ShopAs part of Aistear, or Play Rota, we have been busy learning about "The Shop".
Many of us have experience visiting and purchasing an item in a shop. Using our previous knowledge and experiences, we created a mind map by putting all of our ideas on paper. We took some time to create and illustrate our own toy. Our illustrations are on display in the shop. Some are on special offer! We have also been learning about money. We recognise that this learning is really valuable and meaningful both in our shop and in real life. Check out a photograph of our shop below! Painting PatternsIn Maths, we have been learning about pattern. We looked closely at our clothing and around our classroom for evidence of pattern. We listened and responded to some videos and songs about pattern. Then, we read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We really enjoyed it! We painted our own caterpillars to demonstrate our understanding of pattern. We could choose to use two colours or three colours to create our patterns. Check out our patterned caterpillars below! We are proud of this work! After painting our patterns, we took part in some "Very Hungry Caterpillar" yoga. This was a calm, enjoyable way to conclude this lesson. See us in action in the photographs below Stars in Our Eyes!Recently, we have been learning about Space. To compliment this learning, we decided to make stars from clay. A wire was used to cut the clay. First, we explored the clay using our hands and fingers. We discussed the colour and texture of the clay and if we liked or disliked how it felt in our hands. Then, we made a list of ways in which we could manipulate the clay. This list included words like "pinch", "roll", "squash", "stretch", "twist" and "press". Finally, we rolled, squashed and pinched the clay into the form of a star. There was great (and messy!) learning in this. We had lots of fun! We've learned that stars shine brightly and that they could be either white or yellow. We painted our stars one of these colours. We were so happy to take them home today! Senior Infants' Second CertificateWe are delighted to announce that we received a certificate for "Best Líne" at assembly last week! We won the certificate for "Friendliest Class" in October and have been waiting patiently for another. We did it!
We have worked hard on standing and walking safely in our line. We have been mindful to walk quietly and respectfully to yard, from yard and around the school building. Our hard work has paid off and it feels wonderful! We hope to receive more certificates over the coming weeks. Well done, Laura's class! Keep up the great work! |
